Firm sponsors fifth international day of crisis competition

18 Apr 2017

International law firm Simmons & Simmons will be sponsoring King’s College London’s Day of Crisis, an academic contest between different universities during which teams of students have to solve an international crisis.

The firm’s Paris office has supported the last four editions of the contest which was originally organised by the University Paris X (Paris West).

The crisis takes place over the course of 24 hours; student teams will face a series of major international crises. Competing teams must represent governments, international organisations, or non-governmental organisations, in dealing with a variety of legal issues quickly, accurately and diplomatically. The crisis evolves as the 24 hours unfold, with new information and questions arising. Teams will be requested to advise their client by drafting documents (press release, note verbale, legal filing); negotiating on behalf of a client or elaborating diplomatic or judicial strategies. This 24-hour non-stop international law and diplomacy competition challenges students’ knowledge of public international law, and their skills in teamwork, drafting, negotiation and working under pressure.

Projects partners Juliet Reingold and Patrick Wallace and dispute resolution partner based in the firm’s Paris office, Etienne Kowalski will be ‘serving’ on the Jury of the International Day of Crisis Competition. Other members of the jury include the NATO Legal Adviser, a Foreign & Commonwealth Office official, and international law professors from Paris, King’s and Central European University.

Partner, Juliet Reingold commented, ‘We are thrilled to be taking part in this event for the fifth year running. Year on year we are impressed by the calibre of the students, their technical knowledge and their interest in understanding global affairs and the importance of being global citizens. This year the winner will receive a space on our summer vacation scheme, a very competitive scheme with thousands of applicants applying each year. We wish all the teams the best of luck – may the best team win!’

The competition will open with a drinks reception on Thursday 20 April 18:00-20:00 where representatives of the firm will welcome the teams and clients in attendance.
