Simmons & Simmons receives key appointment from UK Government

Simmons & Simmons has been appointed to the UK Government’s Finance and Highly Complex Legal Advice (FaCLS) panel, which provides for legal services to Central Government and its associated bodies. Work that falls in scope for the panel will include highly complex transactions, finance, refinancing, capital markets, corporate transactions, projects, regulation and those involving innovative and strategically important transformational change.

The appointment, which is for an initial two year period from 21 August 2017, confirms the firm’s strong track record acting for HM Government and the wider public sector on complex and high profile matters. The firm’s UK Government Group has over 25 years’ experience, including advising ten central Government Departments on more than 50 major transactions with a combined value of over £100bn.

Commenting on the appointment, partners Charles Mayo and Helen Hancock said: “The scope of this panel will include work of notable innovation and complexity including matters that can impact on national financial stability, cover issues of national importance, or involve the management of major risks to taxpayer interests. This appointment is an endorsement of our ability to deal with novel, first time and urgent matters for HM Government and of our track record of delivering resilient outcomes that meet the often complex requirements of matters conducted in the public domain.”

Jonathan Hammond, head of the firm’s international financial markets practice group, added: “This appointment will allow Simmons & Simmons to draw on both public and private sector experience to provide finance and complex advice to UK Government. Working for the public sector demands fresh thinking and innovation to achieve the best outcomes in the most complex and urgent situations.”

Simmons & Simmons was ranked among the Top 10 Most Innovative Firms in Europe in the FT Innovative Lawyers Report 2016, in which it was commended for work including transactions for the Department of Health and the British Business Bank plc.

Simmons & Simmons’ appointment to the FaCLS Panel is supported by the appointment as approved key sub-contractors of Bates Wells Braithwaite on additional public and administrative law support and Brodies on Scots law aspects.
