Simmons & Simmons Translator named ‘most innovative use of technology’

Simmons & Simmons Translator was named the ‘most innovative use of technology’ at The Lawyer Awards 2017.
Held at Grosvenor House in London on 27 June 2017, the awards brings together over 1,300 private practice lawyers and senior corporate counsel to celebrate excellence across the industry.
Simmons & Simmons Translator was a unique in the world software tool created by Simmons & Simmons’ IP partner Darren Meale to tackle Article 28 declarations, a key challenge for EU trade mark owners over the last 12 months following a change of practice at the EU Intellectual Property Office during the course of 2016. Simmons & Simmons Translator took a challenging and time-consuming manual task and automated it using custom designed algorithms and templates. It was able to turn a job which would have taken days into an almost instantaneous task.
By way of example, for one major entertainment company portfolio, Simmons & Simmons Translator identified 317 trade mark registrations eligible for a declaration, and prepared more than a 1,000 pages of documentation to achieve this. From instructing the software to receiving a PDF of the declarations, this took – with no exaggeration - less than two minutes.
Darren Meale commented: “we are really thrilled to receive recognition of what we achieved with Translator. It started with a big idea to do something differently and we were able to execute that idea to create a truly unique product.”
The firm also came second in the Infrastructure Projects Team of the Year category with partner Adrian Nizzola in attendance on the night.
Simmons & Simmons continues to find and exploit new ways of delivering value to its existing and future clients through innovation. Other examples include Launchplus and its range of regional versions, the Netting + Collateral Reviewer as well as the recently launched FinTech fund.
