Celebrating Environment Week 2018
06 Jun 2018
From 04 – 08 June 2018, international law firm Simmons & Simmons celebrates its Environment Week. The week is in line with the UN World Environment Day (Tuesday 05 June) and this year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”, calling for people globally to participate in the war on plastic by making changes in their everyday lives.
To demonstrate the firm’s ongoing commitment to combating the extreme consequences of dependence on plastic and driving change, Simmons has trialled the removal of all single-use plastics from the firm for the duration of Environment Week with a view to making this a permanent change. Disposable coffee cups and plastic water cups will be banned, along with plastic cutlery and drinks stirrers.
The firm has received extremely positive feedback about the plastic reduction initiatives so far.
While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become overly dependent on the single-use of disposable plastic – with severe environmental consequences. Simmons & Simmons has made its own contribution this World Environment Day, by raising awareness and inspiring action to form the global movement needed to beat plastic pollution for good.
Colin Passmore, Senior Partner at Simmons & Simmons said: “World Environment Day is an incredibly important cause that needs to take centre stage. When we think about the impact our everyday habits are having on wildlife and the planet itself, it is virtually impossible to stand idly by. Here at Simmons & Simmons we are always seeking to affect positive change, in whatever way we can. Our Environment Week is a step in the right direction but we are conscious that there is more work to do and will continue to make strides to improve our practices.”
World Environment Day is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated around the world.
Also going on at Simmons & Simmons:
- removal of disposable, single-use plastic and paper cups
- sustainable food served in the canteen
- tours of the London office demonstrating the environmental improvements made to the building, how recycling rates are so high, and how the modifications have won awards.
