Romeo Battigaglia awarded Best Regulatory Lawyer of the Year
29 Nov 2018
Romeo Battigaglia, head of financial markets for Italy at international law firm Simmons & Simmons has been named Best Regulatory Lawyer of the Year at the 2018 TopLegal Awards ceremony held in Rome on 27 November. The awards mark one of the most important nights of the year for Italian business lawyers as TopLegal is a leading benchmark publication for law in Italy.
The jury explained its decision by highlighting Romeo’s unparallelled expertise, making reference to the assistance to Blackstone in obtaining one of the first authorisations to offer direct lending in Italy, granted by the Bank of Italy to a foreign alternative investment fund. The approval provided a significant commercial advantage against other players, allowing Blackstone to actively market its direct lending capabilities, a tool which very few international funds can currently deploy without the approval of the Bank of Italy. Romeo was praised also for the cutting-edge advice to Etimos Partners (and to its founding partners Antonio Pace and Prof. Stefano Preda) in the creation of the Morgan Stanley Geo-Risk Macro Fund, the first hedge macro-fund based on a geopolitical analysis, whose investment manager and investor is InvestCorp.
Romeo Battigaglia commented: “We have earned an enviable reputation as one of Europe's leading financial markets team, with a unique in-depth knowledge of regulatory matters. I would particularly like to emphasize that, although this is an individual award, it is the result of a long-term team effort which started back in 2002 with the launch of a dedicated Italian financial services group, subsequently boosted by our international capabilities”.
Commenting on the award win, Jonathan Hammond, international head of financial markets said: “We are proud to announce the latest achievement of our financial markets practice. In addition to reinforcing our pre-eminent position in the Italian market, this award also highlights the continued strengthening of our international capabilities. We are grateful for this recognition and thank our clients for their continued support.”
The night’s winners were selected by a joint team composed of TopLegal journalists and researchers working throughout the year. Assisting them was a 32-strong panel of in-house legal experts drawn from a cross-section of domestic and international corporates and financial institutions based in Italy.
