Celebrating International Women's Day 2019

08 Mar 2019

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on 8 March. The event is described as something that “is not country, group or organisation specific - and belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.”

Since 1911, the event has been a call to action for accelerating gender parity and this year is no different. The 2019 campaign theme is ‘Balance for Better’ and poses a question about how we as individuals can assist in achieving true gender balance both in the work environment and in society as a whole. The idea of balance has led us to consider exactly what it means both for us and those who are members of our network.

How we are Balancing for Better?

Key promotion targets: We strive to meet our aspirational target that each year, 40% of all annual partner and managing associate promotions will be women

Sponsorship: Our ongoing focus on leadership development, mentoring and sponsorship creates lasting change and ensures our strongest people reach their true potential. Female Managing Associates are allocated a senior equity partner sponsor to provide support on their route to partnership

Gender Balance Committees: Our partner, associate and business services gender balance committees help to ensure we are always listening and identifying opportunities to further female progression.

Networks and collaborating with our clients: The Number One Club, now in its eleventh year, supports the development and retention of talented female colleagues and provides a platform for all staff to build new business relationships and opportunities with existing and prospective female clients and with women’s networks at our client organisations.

In order to explore this theme, we recently conducted a roundtable at Frederick Bremer School. Since 2012, we have partnered with Frederick Bremer to deliver our Young Talent Programme. The roundtable was chaired by Young Talent students from three different cohorts and attended by our partners, colleagues and clients who discussed the idea of balance and what it means to them.
