A double win for Simmons & Simmons at the IFLR Europe Awards

International law firm Simmons & Simmons received two awards at the 2019 IFLR Europe Awards, held in London on 4 April 2019. Now in their 20th year, the annual awards celebrate legally innovative teams and deals in Europe.
Simmons & Simmons was awarded Debt and Equity-linked Deal of the Year for its work on Swiss Re’s exchangeable note issuance. The firm acted for UBS and the other joint bookrunners on the highly complex and innovative US$500mn non-dilutive exchangeable bond issue by Swiss Re (the world’s second largest reinsurance company). The team was led by partners Piers Summerfield and Jonathan Mellor supported by managing associate Leon Yap.
The issuance was structured through a Dutch special purpose vehicle. Partners Eucharia Bragg and Alan Davies led on the repackaging aspects of the transaction. Dutch law advice was provided by partners René van Eldonk and Marieke Driessen. Expertise in relation to hedging arrangements entered into alongside the issuance was provided by partner Paul Browne with support from managing associate Oliver West.
Commenting on receiving the award partner, Piers Summerfield said: “We are delighted to have been recognised in this way. The awards also recognise certain individuals who may help to shape the future of the market. This year, managing associate, Kathryn James was awarded in the International Rising Star of the Year category. Kathryn has extensive experience advising on all forms of structured finance and securitisation transactions.
