The firm is awarded Litigation Team of the Year at the 2019 Lawyer Awards

The commercial litigation team at international law firm Simmons & Simmons has been named Litigation Team of the Year at the 2019 Lawyer Awards. These awards are one of the biggest celebrations of legal excellence in Europe, showcasing impressive achievements in the industry.
The firm’s Litigation team was awarded the title in conjunction with Travers Smith with whom the team successfully defended Grant Thornton and two of its partners, and Johannes Johannsson (respectively) against claims brought by the Tchenguiz brothers.
The case received national attention and was a particularly impressive example of the team’s ability. The litigation was exceptionally hard-fought and complex, in terms of the number and the range of contested issues as well as in terms of the volume of material to be marshalled, reviewed and considered. The claim, brought in the Commercial Court against Grant Thornton UK LLP and others, was abandoned after just three days in Court of what was set to be a 12-week trial.
Commenting on the award win, Paul Baker (Head of UK Dispute Resolution) said: “We are delighted to have received this award which is another great recognition of our work on a technically complex and challenging case. The team’s dedication, hard work and technical skill over a six-year period resulted in resounding success both for our clients and the team. I am thrilled that we continue to be recognised for our work on this matter, which further demonstrates its impact on the industry as a whole."
This award follows the firm’s recent win at the 2019 Legal Business awards for its work on the same case.
The Simmons & Simmons team consisted of Ian Hammond, Paul Baker, Elizabeth Williams, Kirsten Kitt, Alexandra Webster, Emily Blower, Amelia Handoll-Clark, Katie Bridge and Jon Malik.
