Alvaro has extensive experience in banking, financial regulatory, corporate finance, real estate, restructuring and distressed debt. He has particular focus on banking, restructuring and has advised major international banks on the restructuring and refinancing of debts including some of the largest real-estate and industrial companies in Spain.

Recent Work
  • advising international investment funds on the establishment of complex real estate investment structures to be offered to Spanish companies in the financial institutions sector
  • advising international investment banks and funds in the restructuring process and refinancing of debts of several major Spanish corporations (Abengoa, Nueva Pescanova, FCC, Metrovacesa, Martinsa-Fadesa and others)
  • advising US hedge funds on distressed debt portfolio acquisitions of mortgage loans from Spanish banks. This includes advice in relation to the setting up of a Spanish vehicle for the purpose of acquiring the portfolio, complex financing structures and formalisation of senior and subordinated loan agreements, transfer agreements and third party servicing arrangements
  • advising on various loan facilities granted to Spanish companies operating in a variety of sectors under a restructuring arrangement with creditors. The loans, secured with a complex security package including pledges over trade receivables and bank accounts

Background

Alvaro joined the Madrid office in May 2000, became a partner in 2002.

Prior to joining the firm, Alvaro worked for 13 years in the legal department of BBVA, previously Argentaria (including five years as head legal counsel of the real estate division of Argentaria). He has also been legal counsel, secretary and member of the board of directors of several subsidiaries of the banking group.

Alvaro was admitted to the Madrid Bar Association in 1985.
